Methodology

How the calculator works.

We calculate results from published card terms and the spending you provide. A language model does not choose or rank the cards.

Spending inputs

You can enter yearly totals or choose CSV, OFX, and QFX statement files. We count purchases, subtract refunds, and leave out payments and transfers. If your files cover less than a year, we estimate a full year from the months provided.

Each file is attached to the card that produced it. Complete field matches are accepted automatically; you only need to open them when something looks wrong. Files with the same columns share one compact review. You can open each reward category to see the local transaction rows and explanation behind it. Strong transaction IDs can remove the same row from overlapping exports; uncertain lookalikes stay visible for your review.

Paying your balance in full

The calculator assumes you pay your statement balance in full. It does not calculate interest or a repayment plan. If you carry a balance, interest can cost much more than the rewards you earn.

Reward value

We apply each card's earn rates, spending limits, point values, annual fees, and foreign-currency fees. Perks are shown separately unless they have a clear cash value that is included in the result.

For a redemption bonus, we enforce published minimum balances and purchase amounts. The estimate assumes a recognized eligible purchase can be redeemed in the issuer's app within its permitted purchase window; the issuer's app decides actual eligibility.

Redemption bonuses use the terms in effect on the analysis date, even when your statements cover earlier dates. A bonus does not apply before its start date or after its end date. Three-year comparisons repeat the estimated annual value, with the welcome offer counted once; they are not a forecast of future changes to card terms.

Card combinations

We compare using one main card, two cards, or a main card plus store cards. We only suggest an extra card when the added rewards are worth more than its added fees for your spending.

Welcome offers

First-year offers are shown separately from regular yearly rewards. Check the issuer's current terms, eligibility, and deadline before applying.

Ranking independence

Commissions do not change calculations, comparisons, or result order.

Important limits

  • Merchant category coding can differ by issuer and payment method.
  • Approval, credit limits, and offer eligibility are issuer decisions.
  • Interest can easily outweigh the value of rewards.
  • Card terms can change after the date shown on a card page.
  • An account-year spending limit is estimated as one 12-month period; your actual reset date depends on when the issuer opened or changed the card.
  • Estimates are educational calculations, not financial advice.

Sources and corrections

Each card page links to the sources used and the date they were checked. A page design update does not mean its card terms were checked again. Scheduled reward changes are shown separately from current earn rates.

We recheck corrections against issuer terms before changing the catalog. Cards whose sources need a fresh review are paused from recommendations. When a number differs from the issuer’s current terms, use the issuer’s terms and do not rely on that estimate until it has been checked.
